We had led more than a hundred students from the SS Universe (Semester at Sea) to Beijing where we were hosted by the University of International Business and Economics. The Chinese students we met in the Student Union, knew as much about America as we did — they had questions on every topic imaginable; some very serious, some not so serious, but most were about living with democracy. This picture was sent to Ruth by one of the students, as we were corresponding back and forth with them after our return home. Then — the Tiananmen Square massacre and all correspondence abruptly ended.
